Well you finally did it, you got the puppy you’ve always wanted. But owning a puppy is a lot of responsibility. At Biscuits we like to help people prepare for their new furry bundle of joy, so we have put together a checklist of things you’ll need for your new puppy.
Crate And Bed
Crates are not just a p[lace for your puppy to sleep, they’re also great training tools when used correctly. A crate provides a safe space for your puppy, a secure place to sleep, and also a great place to introduce new things to your pup without making them feel uncomfortable.
Your new puppy is likely going to cry through the first few nights but it is important to keep them in their crate when this happens, and not running to console them immediately. This way, they learn that their crate is a safe space for them to sleep.
Collar And Tags
A collar is critical when owning a puppy. Puppies are curious by nature and can get easily distracted, so you’ll want to make sure your pup can be identified if they run off. Make sure you purchase a reflective collar so it can easily be seen.
Harness And Leash
The harness and leash you purchase will depend on the breed of your puppy. For smaller dogs that pull, you will definitely want to buy a harness. Hen buying a leash, make sure to get one that is durable as puppies like to bite leashes, and their teeth are sharp!
Food And Bowls
Many people don’t know this, but puppies need double the amount of calories adult dogs need. They also need higher levels of fat, protein, phosphorus, and calcium. To make sure your puppy is getting all of the essential nutrients, choose a high-quality food that isn’t just for puppies, but more for your puppies breed and size.
Regarding food and water bowls, it’s always a good idea to use bowls that are dishwasher safe like stainless steel or ceramic, as they are the easiest to clean. Non-slip bottoms are better for puppies as they tend to move their bowls around when eating.
Toys
To keep your puppy entertained and comfortable, you will want to buy both comfort and chew toys. Stuffed animals can help puppies stay comfortable in the first few nights of their new home and crate. Puppy sized chew toys are great for keeping your puppy occupied, instead of them chewing your belongings.
